UK shares end slightly lower with focus on upcoming elections

(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - London, 14 Jun - UK shares closed with election news from the UK and France taking the forefront.

According to the latest polls, Reform UK has overtaken the Conservatives.

While markets in Europe felt the brunt from the results of last weekend's EU parliament elections, which showed a broader shift towards right-wing and far-right parties and caused French president Emmanuel Macron to call for snap legislative elections later in June.

Investors also kept an eye on the rate outlook after this week's policy decision by the Federal Reserve.

Oil prices were set for a weekly gain despite conflicting signals from OPEC and the IEA.

Earlier this week, OPEC reiterated its forecast for robust oil demand growth of over 2 million barrels daily this year, while yesterday the International Energy Agency slashed its oil demand growth forecast for 2024 and warned of a looming supply glut.

The London FTSE 100 closed down 0.21% at 8,146.86 points.
