UK shares end higher after upbeat US GDP data, earnings

NatWest soars (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - London, 26 Jul - Shares in London closed higher boosted by an upbeat start to trading on Wall Street after data showed that US inflation came in lower than expected.

The US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index rose just 0.1% in June from the previous month and was up 2.5% on the year compared to last month's 2.6% rise. The core PCE index, stripping out volatile food and energy, rose 2.6%, slightly above expectations but its slowest annual increase in more than three years.

This comes after yesterday's better than expected GDP report.

Among individual stocks, UK bank NatWest rallied 7.04% at 361.90 pence after reporting that its pretax operating profit fell by less than expected in the first half of the year.

The London FTSE 100 closed up 1.21% at 8,285.71 points.
