TSMC shares slide after Trump's Taiwan comments

US-traded shares down 5.3% premarket (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - New York, 17 Jul - Shares in Taiwan chipmaker TSMC were down sharply in premarket trade after presidential candidate Donald Trump said Taiwan should pay the US for defending it from China.

'I think Taiwan should pay us for defense,' Trump said in an interview published on Tuesday. 'You know, we're no different than an insurance company.' Trump also took a swipe at Taiwan's dominance in making advanced semiconductors. 'They did take about 100% of our chip business,' he said.

The comments raised doubts about the future US commitment to Taiwan should Trump win the US presidential elections in November.

US-traded TSMC shares were down 5.3% in premarket trading.
