Transdev, John Holland win 4.2 bln eur Melbourne tram contract
9-yr contract to operate, maintain Yarra Trams (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Paris , 11 Jul - A consortium composed of French public transport operator Transdev and the Australian group John Holland said it has won a nine-year contract worth 4.2 billion euros (of 6.8 billion Australian dollars) to operate and maintain Yarra Trams, Melbourne's tramway network.
Transdev has a 51% stake in the joint venture and John Holland the remaining 49%. The contract was awarded by the Department of Transport and Planning of the State of Victoria (Australia).
Yarra Trams is one of the oldest and largest light-rail networks in the world. It comprises 24 lines over 250 kilometers of double track and 1,600 stops, covering the capital of the State of Victoria, which has a population of 5.3 million. With more than 500 trams, it carries more than 147 million passengers per year. One hundred next-generation trams, with a capacity of 150 passengers per vehicle, will be added to the existing fleet from 2025.
