The Dallas-based airline said its diluted earnings per share in the period fell to 0.58 dollars from 1.08 the previous year. Analysts expected 0.51 dollars per share.

It said it had liquidity of 11.0 billion dollars, well in excess of debt outstanding of 8.0 billion.

'Our second quarter performance was impacted by both external and internal factors and fell short of what we believe we are capable of delivering,' CEO Bob Jordan said.

Southwest said it is in talks for compensation from Boeing which is its sole supplier of airplanes as the aircraft giant struggles to deliver planes on time following a safety and manufacturing crisis.
