Saipem, Newcleo partner to study offshore nuclear applications

To study use of Newcleo tech for offshore oil, gas installations (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Milan , 05 Sep - Italian energy and infrastructure engineering and construction company Saipem and Italian nuclear power startup Newcleo said they have signed a partnership agreement to identifity offshore applications of Newcleo's technology.

The aim is to study the application of Newcleo's small modular lead-cooled fast reactor (SM-LFR) to provide electricity and zero-emission processing heat to offshore oil and gas installations. The agreement also foresees the possibility of extending the use of Newcleo's nuclear power generation through floating nuclear units hooked up to the onshore power grid or to other users.

Saipem and Newcleo intend to carry out a feasibility study on the possibile development of SM-LFR protyotypes for offshore applications.
