Japanese shares closed sharply lower on profit taking

Nikkei 225 down 1.77% (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Tokyo, 19 Aug - Japanese shares closed sharply lower on profit-taking after last week's gains and concern that a stronger yen could affect earnings of exporters.

The Nikkei closed down 1.77% at 38,388.62 points.

Seven & i surged 23% after saying that it has received a confidential, non-binding, and preliminary proposal from Canadian convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard to acquire all outstanding shares of the company.
