Tokyo Nikkei 225 up 0.14% at 38,700 points (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Tokyo , 02 Sep - Japanese shares closed slightly higher amid mixed Asian markets, with the Nikkei up 0.14% at 38,700 points.

The index recouped most of its early-August losses, when it entered bear market, but still ended last month down 1.6%.

Final data released today by S&P Global and its partner au Jibun Bank showed that in August Japan's purchasing managers' index (PMI) for the manufacturing sector rose to 49.8 from 49.1 in July. The preliminary reading was 49.5.
