Indian shares close higher, extend rebound

Sensex up 0.82% at 74,989 points (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Mumbai, 06 Jun - Indian shares closed higher, extending yesterday's rebound amid strong Asian markets.

Mumbai stocks sank on Tuesday, tumbling from record highs in their worst day in 4 years as early vote counting from the 2024 general elections showed that prime minister Narendra Modi's BJP party was poised for a less sweeping win in than the exit polls had suggested, with opposition party Indian National Congress gaining some ground in the lower house.

Helping support investor sentiment, yesterday a key ally of prime minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata party pledged its support to to the formation of a new government.

The BSE Sensex closed up 0.82% at 74,989 points, while the NSE Nifty closed up 0.83% at 22,808 points.
