India shares close flat to slightly lower; gvt budget in focus

Mumbai BSE Sensex down 0.08% at 80,440 points (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Mumbai , 23 Jul - Indian shares closed flat to slightly lower, dropping for a third straight session amid mixed Asian markets as the government unveiled its first budget under prime minister Narendra Modi's third five-year term.

A tax hike on equity trading weighed on investor sentiment.

Consumer stocks rose on the promise of higher rural spending.

The BSE Sensex index down 0.08% at 80,440 points while the NSE Nifty fell 0.12% to end at 24,479 points.

Mumbai stocks rose last week for a seventh straight week.
