IBM to close China R&D unit in move affecting 1,000 staff

Will move operations to other overseas facilities (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - New York, 26 Aug - IBM is shutting down a key research and development division in China in a move that will affect more than 1,000 staff members, the local Chinese media and people with knowledge of the matter said.

The Wall Street Journal cited IBM executive Jack Hergenrother as telling employees at a virtual meeting that IBM is moving its China R&D operations to other facilities abroad.

Hergenrother told employees IBM faced intensifying competition in China, with its infrastructure business declining in the past few years, some employees attending the meeting said.

The closure will affect more than 1,000 people, most of them working for the company's R&D labs and focusing on the development and testing of products such as enterprise software, the employees said.

Souring relations between the US and China have prompted many multinationals to reconsider their operations in China.
