European shares lower in the wake of EU election

FTSE 100 down 0.61%, DAX down 0.72%, CAC 40 down 1.83% (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Milan, 10 Jun - European shares opened lower due to political uncertainty in the European Union following the results of the election of the European parliament that show gains for right-wing parties.

In France, president Emmanuel Macron dissolved the national parliament and called for a snap election after his party lagged the extreme right in the European vote held yesterday in France.

The extreme-right National Rally is estimated to have obtained 31.5% of the votes yesterday, twice the score of Macron's party.

The first round of the general election will be held on June 30 and the second round on July 7.

In Germany, the Social Democrats, the party of chancellor Olaf Scholz, finished behind the extreme-right Alternative for Germany.

At 0720 GMT the London FTSE 100 was down 0.61% at 8,195.35 points, the Frankfurt DAX was down 0.72% at 18,422.05 points, the Paris CAC 40 fell 1.83% at 7,855.17 points, while in Milan the FTSE MIB dropped 0.87% at 34,360.00 points, and in Madrid the IBEX 35 was down 0.75% at 11,319.50 points.
