European shares close higher on rate cut hopes -2-

JD Sports outperforms, up nearly 10% (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - 22 Aug - In Milan trade, shares of the Italian construction company Webuild were up 3% after a consortium including its US subsidiary Lane was awarded a 466 million dollar contract to build two twin tunnels over the Hudson River in New Jersey. Lane's share of the contract is about 150 million euros.

In London, shares of JD Sports, a UK sports, fashion and outdoor brand retailer, jumped nearly 10% in the wake of strong second quarter results.

Shares of UK recruiter Hays were up 1.84% after initial falling on the news it posted a net loss of 4.9 million pounds in the full year ended June 30 compared to a profit of 138.3 million the year earlier due to a challenging market reflecting low confidence and a longer time to hire.

In Zurich, shares of Swiss Re gained 4.5% as its first-half net profit increased 16% to 2.09 billion dollars. Shares of Dutch insurer Aegon were instead down 5.4% in Amsterdam trade after it posted a net loss of 65 million euros in the first half of the year.
