Europe shares end lower after EU parliament elections

FTSE down 0.20%; DAX down 0.32%; CAC 40 down 1.35% (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - London, 10 Jun - European shares closed lower and the euro hit its lowest level in a month, amid political uncertainty in the wake of European parliament elections that showed gains for right-wing parties.

In France, president Emmanuel Macron dissolved the national parliament and called for a snap election after his party lagged the extreme right in the European vote held yesterday in France.

The extreme-right National Rally is estimated to have obtained 31.5% of the votes yesterday, twice the score of Macron's party.

The first round of the general election will be held on June 30 and the second round on July 7.

In Germany, the Social Democrats, the party of chancellor Olaf Scholz, finished behind the extreme-right Alternative for Germany.

The London FTSE 100 closed down 0.20% at 8,228.48 points, the Frankfurt DAX fell 0.32% at 18,496.75 points, the Paris CAC 40 dropped 1.35% at 7,893.98 points, while in Milan the FTSE MIB lost 0.34% at 34,542.01 points, and in Madrid the IBEX 35 closed 0.41% lower at 11,357.68 points.
