EU says Apple to open access to tap and go payments
Apple commitments without prejudice for DMA probes (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - New York, 11 Jul - Apple will open access to its 'tap and go' payments technology on iPhones to rivals, the EU antitrust watchdog said.
"The commitments address the Commission's competition concerns relating to Apple's refusal to grant rivals access to a standard technology used for contactless payments with iPhones in stores," the European Commission said in a statement.
The commitments will remain in force for ten years.
The commission said Apple's commitments are without prejudice to Apple's current or future obligations under other regulations, in particular relating to other use cases and functionalities within the scope of the Digital Markets Act and the implementation of the Digital Euro.
Apple faces three investigations under the DMA which calls on Big Tech companies to provide a level playing field for rivals and offer consumers more choice.
