EU ready to introduce duties on Chinese electric vehicles

Calls for talks with Chinese authorities (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Brussels, 12 Jun - The European Commission said that it is ready to introduce on July 4 duties on Chinese battery electric vehicles (BEV) unless a compromise is reached with China.

As part of an ongoing investigation, the commission said that it has provisionally concluded that the BEV value chain in China "benefits from unfair subsidisation, which is causing a threat of economic injury to EU BEV producers." The commission added that it has reached out to Chinese authorities to "discuss these findings and explore possible ways to resolve the issues identified in a WTO-compatible manner." Should discussions with Chinese authorities not lead to an effective solution, the commission will introduce import duties on Chinese BEV from July 4 by a guarantee. "They would be collected only if and when definitive duties are imposed," it added. The individual duties the commission would apply to the three sampled Chinese producers would be 17.4% for BYD, 20.0% for Geely and 38.1% for SAIC.

Other BEV producers in China, which cooperated in the commission's investigation but have not been sampled, would be subject a 21.0% duty.

All other BEV producers in China which did not cooperate in the investigation would be subject to a 38.1% duty.
