EU could hit Tesla with duties in China EV tariff plans

EU discloses possible duties on China EV makers, up to 38% (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - New York, 12 Jun - The European Commission said Tesla could receive a specially calculated duty on the cars it manufactures in China and imports to Europe as part of a decision to raise tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

The Commission said today that, as part of its ongoing investigation, it had provisionally concluded that the battery electric vehicles (BEV) value chain in China benefits from unfair subsidisation, which is causing a threat of economic injury to EU BEV producers.

The Commission said it had reached out to Chinese authorities to discuss its findings and explore possible ways to resolve the issues identified in a WTO-compatible manner.

It disclosed the level of provisional countervailing duties it would impose on imports of battery electric vehicles from China if discussions with Chinese authorities did not lead to a solution.

The duties, up to 38%, would be introduced from 4 July.

"Following a substantiated request, one BEV producer in China - Tesla - may receive an individually calculated duty rate at the definitive stage," the Commission said.
