Asian shares close mixed, head for weekly gain

Tokyo Nikkei 225 down 0.05%, S&P ASX 200 up 0.49% (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Tokyo , 07 Jun - Asian shares closed mixed as caution prevailed after yesterday's gains.

Investors awaited US nonfarm payrolls data for more cues on the Federal Reserve's interest rate path.

Rate cuts by the European Central Bank and the Bank of Canada helped support sentiment, while weak US labor market data released this week ramped up hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates by September.

Chinese stocks slid today after mixed trade data from the country, with exports rising much more than expected in May on strong industrial production and improving overseas demand, and imports growing at a slower-than-expected pace amid weak local demand and consumer spending.

The region's stock markets were on track for a weekly gains after a two-week drop. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.02% and was up 3% for the week.

The Nikkei index closed down 0.05% at 38,683 points, in Sydney the S&P ASX 200 closed up 0.49% at 7,860 points, while in Seoul the KOSPI closed up 1.23% at 2,722 points.

The Shanghai Composite index was up 0.08% at 3,050 points and the Hong Kong Hang Seng index was down 0.79% at 18,331 points. In Mumbai the Sensex index was up 1.79% at 76,421 points.
