Asian shares close higher, led by Tokyo

Nikkei 225 up 1.80%, S&P ASX up 0.22% (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Tokyo, 20 Aug - Asian shares closed higher on expectations that the US Fed Chair Powell will indicate that rate cuts are likely to start soon when he speaks at the Jackson Hole symposium later this week.

The Nikkei was up 1.80% at 38,062.92 points thanks to a weakening of the yen which would boost earnings for exporters.

In Sydney, the S&P ASX 200 closed up 0.22% at 7,997.70 points, while in Seoul the KOSPI closed up 0.82% at 2,696.35 points.

In late trade, the Shanghai Composite index was down 1.01% at 2,864.46 points and the Hong Kong Hang Seng index was down 0.50% at 17,482.00 points. In Mumbai the Sensex index rose 0.56% to 80,873.37 points.
