Asia shares close mixed in thin trade; central banks in focus

Tokyo Nikkei 225 up 0.92% (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Tokyo, 10 Jun - Asian shares closed mixed as caution prevailed after last week's gains.

Trading volumes were low as the markets were closed in Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan for public holidays.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 3% last week after a two-week drop.

Today the region's stock markets tracked Friday's losses on Wall Street, where shares dropped on resurgent concerns over US interest rates after a stronger-than-expected US jobs report on Friday that showed that hiring and wage growth picked up in May.

The figures prompted investors to dial back hopes for an early Fed rate cut Investors awaited a Federal Reserve meeting later this week, where the central bank is expected to keep rates steady and offer more cues its future rate path.

US consumer price index inflation data is due this week before the Fed rate decision on Wednesday.

China and India's inflation numbers for May are also on tap on Wednesday.

Japanese stocks rose as data showed today that Japan's economy contracted less than initially reported in January-March as it was lifted by upward revisions to capital spending and inventory data.

The reading comes just days before the BoJ's two-day monetary policy meeting later this week, where the central bank is expected to tighten monetary policy by lowering its bond purchases, following recent signs of a rebound in Japanese inflation and improving wages.

Weighing on global sentiment, the European Union elections showed a broader shift towards right-wing and far-right parties. French president Emmanuel Macron yesterday announced that he will dissolve parliament and called for snap legislative elections later in June following his party lagged Marine Le Pen's far-right party in the EU vote.

The Nikkei index closed up 0.92% at 39,038 points, while in Seoul the KOSPI closed down 0.79% at 2,701 points.

In Mumbai the Sensex index was up 0.10% at 76,773 points in late trade.
