Asia shares close higher, rise for 5th straight month

Tokyo Nikkei 225 up 0.61%, S&P ASX 200 up 0.10% (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Tokyo , 28 Jun - Asian shares closed higher, rebounding from yesterday's losses after a mixed close on Wall Street overnight.

The region's stock markets rose for a fifth straight month on hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates this year amid cooling US inflation.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.35%, led by South Korean and Indian stocks, and was on track for a more than 3% gain for the month, its best performance since February.

The regional index rose 0.9% last week to its highest level since April 2022.

Investors assessed key economic data out of Japan and awaited May's US core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed's preferred measure of inflation, due today.

The Nikkei index closed up 0.61% at 39,583 points, in Sydney the S&P ASX 200 closed up 0.10% at 7,767 points, while in Seoul the KOSPI closed up 0.49% at 2,797 points.

The Shanghai Composite index was up 0.59% at 2,963 points and the Hong Kong Hang Seng index was up 0.12% at 17,732 points.

In Mumbai the Sensex index was up 0.31% at 79,482 points.
