US Surgeon General calls for warning labels for social media

Move would require approval by Congress (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - New York, 17 Jun - The US surgeon general said he would push for a warning label on social media platforms advising parents that using the platforms might damage adolescents' mental health.

"The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency - and social media has emerged as an important contributor," Dr. Vivek Murthy said in an opinion piece in the The New York Times.

"It is time to require a surgeon general's warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents." Warning labels, like those on cigarette packets, are one of the most powerful tools available to the US's top health official but cannot be unilaterally introduced, requiring approval by Congress.

No such legislation has yet been introduced in either chamber.
