Italy May power demand 24.7 TWh, up 1.9% -2-

Renewables cover 52.5% Italian power demand (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Rome , 21 Jun - Terna note that renewables covered 52.5% of Italian power demand in May 2024, up from 42.3% the year earlier.

Hydropower production rose by 34.7% year on year in May 2024, while solar photovoltaic (PV) output was up 36.3% and wind grew by 10.5%. Terna attributed the increased PV production to both an increase in operational plants and greater irradiance. Geothermal power production instead fell 4.3% while thermal power production decreased 14.6% as renewables grew. In particular, during the month of May coal power production covered roughly just 1% of Italian power demand. Since the beginning of 2024, that figure has remained below 2%.

Terna noted that in the first five months of 2024, new renewable energy capacity totalling 3,015MW came online in Italy, up 42% versus the year earlier.
