Germany's far-right AfD wins in Thuringia, second in Saxony
First electoral victory of far right since World War II (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Milan , 02 Sep - The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has come out ahead in elections in the state of Thuringia and second in Saxony, according to preliminary results from the Sunday vote.
AfD secured 32.8% of the vote compared to 23.4% five years ago, while the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) saw its share of the vote rise to 23.6% from 21.8% five years ago.
In Saxony, AfD won 30.6% of the vote, just below the 31.9% of CDU.
The results mark the first time since World War II that the far right has won in German state elections.
