Eurostar cancels quarter of train services after arson

Arson attacks come just hours before Paris Olympics open (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - New York, 26 Jul - Eurostar will cancel a quarter of its rail services today and over the weekend following a series of fires that hit French high-speed rail lines just hours before the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

In a statement French railway operator SNCF said its network had experienced several concurrent attacks early Friday morning, with fire damaging its facilities and its fiber optic lines.

It called the events a "massive attack aimed at paralysing the network".

Disruption also hit local railway lines in France.

Eurostar services, which connect the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, were hit by disruption to the high-speed line between Paris and Lille in northern France.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the perpetrated the incident.
