Canada rail union files lawsuits against back-to-work order

Canada govt had stepped in to avert supply chain threat (Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - New York, 30 Aug - The Teamsters union that represents workers at both of Canada's largest freight railroads has filed the lawsuits it promised challenging the orders that forced employees back to work and got the trains moving again, the union said.

'The right to collectively bargain is a constitutional guarantee. Without it, unions lose leverage to negotiate better wages and safer working conditions for all Canadians,' the union's President Paul Boucher said Friday.

The government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had stepped into the dispute to avert economic damage and a possible threat to supply chains.

Railroads play a crucial role in the economy delivering more than 1 billion Canadian dollars worth of shipments a day and carrying billions of dollars of goods between the US and Canada every month.
